A high school student in China has reportedly sold his kidney for a transplant operation and used the proceeds to buy an iPhone and iPad, said state press in Beijing on Friday.
The 17-year old boy, who was only identified by his surname Wang, was paid in local currency, which converts to $3,500. The operation took place in the central province of Hunan on April 2011, without his parents' consent.
Xinhua news agency said the boy was recruited from an online chatroom and is now suffering from kidney failure and in deteriorating health.
A surgeon and four others have been arrested and faced charges. One was identified as He Wai, who served as the middle-man between the hospital worker and the teenager, and was paid 10 times more than the boy got.
