"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
A hen in Sri Lanka gave birth to a chick without an egg, popping a new twist of the age-old question which had been a topic of debate for years.
The egg was incubated in the hen for 21 days and then hatched inside, instead of passing out of the hen's body and being incubated outside.
The chick was born healthy, but the mother died. A post-mortem conducted on the hen's body concluded it died of internal wounds.
The government veterinary officer said he had never seen anything like it before. Chief veterinary officer of Welimada, PR Yapa examined the hen's carcass and found out that the fertilized egg had developed within the hen's reproductive system, but stayed inside the hen's body until it hatched.
