SC may release Hacienda Luisita final ruling next week

The Supreme Court on Wednesday has said that the final ruling on the distribution of 4,916-hectare land in Hacienda Luisita will "most probably" be out by next week.

Supreme Court spokesman and court administrator Midas Marquez said during a media forum in Baguio City on Wednesday that the magistrates are most likely to resolve by Tuesday next week (April 24) the motion for reconsideration filed by Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI) to reverse a November 2011 ruling on the land dispute.

The Hacienda Luisita is a sugar plantation estate in Tarlac province, owned by the members of the Cojuangco family, including  the late President Corazon Aquino, mother of incumbent President Benigno Aquino III.

In November 22, 2011, the Court ordered the distribution of the hectares of land to over 6,000 farmer beneficiaries pursuant to the order of Presidential Agrarian Reform Council (PARC) in December 2005, adopting the modified version of the earlier decision down July of that year. The ruling has ordered HLI to pay the original beneficiaries a total of P1,330,511,500.

HLI asked for its reversal and sought a clarification on the amount to be paid the farmers.

Farmers led by the Alyansa ng mga Manggagawang Bukid sa Asyenda Luisita (Ambala) opposed HLI’s reversal bid.
