NEDA chief quits post

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director-General and Socio-economic Planning Secretary Cayetano W. Paderanga Jr. has resigned, due to health reasons.

"Sec. Paderanga has signified his intention to step down for health reasons. He has been in service to this administration for the last two years," said presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte Saturday on government-run dzRB radio.

Paderanga also headed NEDA in 1990-1992 during President Corazon Aquino's administration. He was also a member of the Monetary Board of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

"We thank him for the two years, the help that he has extended to the President," added Valte, who belied speculations that Paderanga was made to resign.

President Noynoy Aquino has appointed University of the Philippines School of Economics dean and professor Arsenio Balisacan as the acting socio-economic planning secretary, following Paderanga's resignation. Valte said Balisacan's papers were signed last May 10.
