Newsweek has anointed U.S. President Barack Obama as "the first gay president", following his announcement of the support in same-sex marriage.
Obama appeared on the cover of the magazine, with a rainbow-colored halo. "Obama's earned every stripe in this haloed rainbow," said Tina Brown, editor of Newsweek, on her Twitter account (@TheTinaBeast).
On May 9, Obama announced his support in same-sex marriage, ending years of public equivocating over the issue, and said he was "evolving" because of contact with friends and other people who are gay. He became the first U.S. President to rights to marriage of same-sex couples.
Newsweek made no apologies on the president's controversial cover, which is as controversial as Time's photo of a Los Angeles mother breastfeeding her three-year old boy with the headline "Are you mom enough?."
