No-smoking in Rizal Park starting May 31

The National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) has imposed a no-smoking zone is Rizal Park in Manila starting on May 31, to coincide with the World No-Tobacco Day.

NPDC will work together with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to enforce the policy, which will slap fines to violators.

  • 1st time offenders - P500 - P1,000 + 8 hours community service
  • 2nd time offenders - P1,000 - P5,000 + 16 hours community service
  • 3rd time offenders - P5,000 - P10,000

The World No-Tobacco Day aims to "focus on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry's brazen and increasingly aggressive attempts to undermine the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) because of the serious danger they pose to public health."

This year's theme is "tobacco industry interference," said WHO.
