Active LPA intensifies into tropical depression 'Karen'

The active low pressure area east of Mindanao has intensified into a tropical depression and was named "Karen," the state weather bureau PAGASA said before noon on Tuesday.

"Karen" was spotetd 700 kilometers east of Tandag, Surigao del Sur as of 10:00 a.m. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kkph near the center and is forecast to move northwest at 7 kph.

PAGASA said an estimated rainfall of 10 to 20 millimeters per hour is expected within Karen's 300 km diameter. The bureau pointed out, however, that Karen remains too far to affect any part of the country at this point.

The tropical depression is expected to intensify into a storm in the next 6 to 12 hours.

By Wednesday morning, "Karen" is expected 600 km east of Siargao Islang and 460 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar by Thursday morning.
