'Karen' now a typhoon

"Karen" has intensified into a typhoon while still over the East Philippine Sea, state weather bureau PAGASA said on its 11 a.m. bulletin.

The typhoon was spotted 760 km east of Infanta, Quezon with maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph. It is moving northwest at 13 kph.

By Saturday morning, it is forecast to be 420 km east of Basco, Batanes and 320 km east of Southern Taiwan by Sunday morning.

No public storm warning signal was raised, however, fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon, eastern seabord of Visayas and Mindanao due to strong winds.

"Karen" is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon that will bring rains over the western section of Visayas and of Mindanao.
