The active low pressure area spotted east of Southern Luzon has developed into a tropical storm and was named "Lawin," state weather bureau PAGASA said on Thursday.
On its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said "Lawin" was located 910 km east of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center. It is moving west at 7 kph.
Although it is still too far to affect any part of the country, PAGASA said moderate to heavy rain (5 to 15 mm per hour) is expected within 300 kilometers of the tropical storm.
"Lawin" is forecast to be 750 km east of Virac by Saturday afternoon, and 660 km east of Infanta, Quezon by Sunday afternoon.
