A young Hasidic couple rushing to the hospital to deliver their first child were killed in a car crash in Brooklyn, New York, but the unborn baby survived.
Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21, were travelling in a taxi when a BMW crashed into theirs at an intersection in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Both were pronounced dead in the hospital, but the premature infant was delivered alive at the Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan.
The taxi driver was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital. Both the driver of the BMW and a passenger fled and were being sought, police said.
The Glaubers were members of Brooklyn's ultra-orthodox Jewish community - the largest in the world outside Israel.
More than 1,000 people mourned and prayed for the couple Sunday afternoon.
