Girl shot by 'sumpak' inside classroom

A 13-year-old student of Ricardo Papa High School in Taguig City was rushed to the hospital after being wounded by an improvised gun or "sumpak" Thursday morning.

The victim, identified as Norhanna Geronimo, was accidentally shot by her cousin, 14-year-old Jessie Geronimo as the first went to the latter's room to find out why he did not go out by recess time.

The suspect was said to be showing the firearm when it went off at around 9 a.m and hit the jaw of his cousin.

The victim was immediately rushed to Taguig-Pateros District Hospital.

Police have recovered the homemade gun as the suspect was taken to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for custody.

Authorities are still investigating how the student sneaked the firearm into the school despite security measures.

The school's principal meanwhile said the suspect is a victim of bullying outside their school, reason for him to carry the firearm for his protection. Police said he is a member of the gang Young Latino Crept.
