Man put alive into morgue freezer, dies

A Russian man died after having been put in a morgue freezer alive after the staff confused his body with another corpse, officials said.

Doctors said the unconscious body of the 57-year-old man was taken from his apartment in the Pskov region to the morgue, where he was pronounced dead and was put immediately in a freezer.

Forensic investigation showed however the man was still alive when he arrived at the morgue.

The man was brought to the morgue and left there by his relatives when no medical personnel was present, the Pskov administration said, leading the morgue personnel to later confuse two bodies and put the man in the freezer.

An official said the doctors and morgue workers had violated a rule that after a person is proclaimed dead, his body has to be kept for a certain period of time at room temperature.

The regional authorities have called an investigation for the period of which the head doctor and a deputy have been suspended from service.
