Philippine Daily Inquirer on Saturday was taken in by a spoof cover of Time Magazine with President Benigno Aquino III on it with his mouth agape.
The cover, which was run on Inquirer's front page, originated from Facebook page "Showbiz Government," a satirical page which usually bashes Aquino's administration and its allies.
"We stand corrected. It was an honest mistake," Inquirer editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc said in a statement.
She did not say who gave the paper the picture, which had the Filipino leader saying in its caption: "I'm just the face of the whole country." It however remained on the paper's website, Inquirer.net, on Saturday afternoon.
Aquino is among Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World," but the magazine said he was not among the seven on the list who were featured on the covers of US and global editions.
