At least one people died while 30 others are missing as a roll-on-roll-off (RORO) vessel sank off Masbate province shortly before dawn on Friday, GMA News reports.
The MV Lady of Mount Carmel sank off Burias Island in the said province at about 5 a.m., the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said. It left Pio Duran town three hours before the incident.
An officer of the PCG said there were 22 crew members and 40 passengers on the ship's manifest. He hinted engine trouble might have caused the incident.
In an interview, the ship's captain, Lauro Mateo, said he has yet to confirm the exact number of passengers and added not all passengers managed to wear life jackets.
He added it only took a minute for the ship, which, in a separate report, was carrying two trucks and two buses, to sink.
