Student commits suicide for thinking girlfriend died from 'Yolanda'

Extreme depression caused a student in Eastern Samar to take his own life after being unable to contact his girlfriend and assumed she died from the devastating super typhoon "Yolanda."

A report from DZMM said Glen Brando Nepal, 23, a student of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) hanged himself inside his room in Brgy. Poblacion, Salcedo town in the said province.

His mother Rosalinda said Glen suffered severe depression when he was not able to reach out to his girlfriend, who works in a pawnshop in Coron, Palawan, which was also affected by the typhoon.

Glen allegedly asked his brother to accompany him to seek a higher place at their barangay to find a cellphone signal, but his request was not granted.

The victim's family still has no news about his girlfriend, and cellphone signal in Salcedo is still not restored.

"Yolanda" took the lives of thousands of people when it swept through Samar, Leyte, and nearby provinces in central Philippines early this month. International aids poured for the victims, but hundreds of thousands of people completely lost their homes and prompted to relocate to Manila to start a new living.
