Duterte irked by Ramon Bautista's 'hipon' joke

Davao City vice mayor Paolo "Pulong" Duterte was irked by comedian-writer Ramon Bautista's joke about the city having a lot of women who are "hipon", a local slang term which means a person who has a sexy body but ugly face.

"Ang daming hipon dito sa Davao, alright, 'hipon, hipon.' ... When I say 'hi,' you say 'pon,'" Bautista joked during the Kadayawan Festival event held in the said city.

Duterte, who was present at the event, called the attention of Bautista and lectured him backstage on how to respect women. He asked the comedian to apologize publicly.

Former mayor Sara Duterte lambasted Bautista and even wants him to be declared persona non grata. If city officials would pass a resolution, in will bar the Internet celebrity from entering the Mindanao city.

"Attended this Kadayawan Invasion and heard this (Ramon Bautista) guy say "hipon" ang mga babae sa Davao. Pila sa ako mga fb friends ang konsehal.. if you do not call out this guy as a persona non grata, your doing a disservice to women all over!! P at F to you Ramon Bautista! bisita ka lang, gumalang ka," she said on her Facebook post.

However, before the event ended, Bautista showed up again to say sorry.

"I am here in front of you to say my apologies because sinabi ko na maraming hipon dito. Nahihiya po ako sa inyo because you welcomed me in your beautiful city. Nandito po ako lagi at nage-enjoy po ako dito. Para masabi ko po ang mga bagay na 'yon na marami sa inyo ang na-offend, I say my sincerest apologies. Sana po ay matanggap niyo," he said, as some clapped while others booed.

"Nandito po ako makisaya sa Kadayawan Festival at para maging enjoyable ang gabi ito. From the bottom of my heart, sobrang nahihiya po ako sa inyong lahat. Sana ay mapatawad niyo po ako. Mahal ko po kayong lahat. Maraming salamat po. Sana mag-enjoy po tayo. Again, my sincerest apologies. I love you all. Party, party tayo!"

Bautista is also a University of the Philippines professor and authored the hit novel "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo," which was eventually turned into a movie.
