How PAGASA names typhoons

Typhoon Falcon has maintained its strength as it continues moving in a west northwest direction. Screencap from PAGASA.

Since 1963, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has been naming storms that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in order to make it easier for people to understand and prepare them for risk awareness, management and reduction.

The World Meteorological Organization's typhoon committee uses numbers instead of names, but the Philippines' weather bureau has patterned the naming of storms after the American practice. It is presumed that giving local names to the typhoons will be easily remembered and noticed by local islanders.

PAGASA has already prepared the list of typhoon names which starts from A-Z (without the letter X). Four groups of names are listed which are recycled after every four years.

10 auxiliary names are also prepared in case the 26th storm enters the country for the year.

People became inquisitive on how PAGASA names typhoons after "Kanor" was replaced by "Karding" as the 11th typhoon to enter the country in 2014. "Kanor" was said to be unsuitable as a typhoon name because in pertains to the subject in a viral sex video.

Although the list is final, PAGASA could also omit names if the typhoon has brought over P1 billion cost of damage on its wrath, and leaving plenty of people perished. To name a few are "Ondoy" (2009), "Yolanda" (2011), and "Pepeng" (2009).

PAGASA also does not always name typhoons after a person. Some names are "Zigzag" and "Lawin." The bureau also does not name typhoons after a name of a popular politician or celebrity.

PAGASA drew these names after the "Name a Bagyo Contest" in 1999.
