Is the Iraq War over?

Credit: MPRnews

After nine years, the U.S. battle flag was lowered in Baghdad December 15. It marked the end of the Iraq War.

American president Barack Obama applauded the 4,500 soldiers who died and thousands who were injured. He said, "Iraq's future will be in the hands of its people. America's war in Iraq is over." Obama welcomed the soldiers home.

"Those lives have not been lost in vain. They gave life to an independent, free and sovereign Iraq. And because of the sacrifices made, these years of war have now yielded to a new era of opportunity.", U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Pannetta said in his speech.

Saddam Hussein, Iraq's president at the early times of war, was prisoned and sentenced to death. The political system is divided along sectarian and ethnic lines. The oil industry is only now coming online. Low-level attacks are still around. Experts are concerned about the Iraqi security force's ability to defend the nation against foreign threats. Weapons of mass destruction were reportedly laid to rest. The Iraq War has brought 100,000 Iraqi deaths.

Iraq was set to democracy.

Japan declares 'cold shutdown' at Fukushima plant

EPA / STRINGER

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced December 16 that engineers have brought the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant to a "cold shutdown condition", nine months after being devastated by the earthquake and tsunami, BBC News reported.

March 11 earthquake and tsunami badly damaged the six-reactor Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Blasts occurred at four of the reactors after waves knocked out vital cooling systems.

Declaring a cold shutdown condition is seen as a key milestone in efforts to bring the plant under control. Engineers say reactors at the plant are stable. Workers at theTokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco)-operated plant have been using sea water to cool the reactors. Waste water has built up and some contaminated liquid has been released into the sea. A 20km exclusion zone remains in place around the plan, mainly for security purposes.

The government reviews evacuation zones established in the immediate aftermath of the incident. More than 80,000 people had to leave the area, but radiation levels in some places remain too high for them to return home. It also said it could take up to 40 years to fully decommission the plant and clean up surrounding areas.

Experts have also warned that the plant could be further damaged if a powerful aftershock were to strike. Last week, Tepco officials confirmed that 45 cubic meters of water had leaked into the sea from a crack in the foundation of a water treatment facility.

Massive black hole to consume giant gas cloud

A super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is perking to eat an approaching giant gas cloud, which lies some 27,000 light years from Earth.

Astronomers hope that the cosmic feast will give way to studying how black holes consume celestial bodies. They just see them turn bright and then fade, and never knowing what was really happening.

Scientists believe that the gas cloud will enter the black hole's territory sometime in 2013, doubling its speed in the last seven years, to 2,350km per second. The black hole, dubbed as Sagittarius A* and has a mass of about 4 million times of our Sun is the closest, enough for the astronomers to observe and study in detail.

Researchers estimated that the gas cloud's total mass is about three times that of Earth, and is expected to emit a huge flare of radiation as it passes the point of no return, beginning to elongate as it approaches the black hole. X-rays and radio waves will outburst as the cloud, composed mostly of hydrogen and helium gas gets hotter and is torn apart.

Nothing, even light, can escape the pull of a black hole.

Francine calls PNoy 'panot'

Twitter really is the most exciting social/micro-blogging site nowadays! It has given so many buzz that trended and became an instant talk of the town. The latest, is actress Francine Prieto's reply to a question, which I think has been asked a lot of times already.

A user named @HecklerForever asked Francine if she was willing to date the person with the highest position in the country, that is, President Noynoy Aquino, commonly known as PNoy. Francine (@fwancheen) replied, "~nope. ayoko sa panot."

And what her answer brought the Twitter world? Flame war.

People reacted and they said that PNoy would not date her either. Some tweets attacked her morality, since Francine used to be a Seiko sexy star. Some, seemed to agree with Francine and tweeted that PNoy is really "panot".

Francine has been attacked by some twitter users Peter Katigbak (@StPeterski) and the fake Dionisia Pacquiao (@OfacialDionisia). She said she is considering deleting her twitter account again for the second time.
