Man prisoned for five years for 'God does not exist' Facebook post

Another tragedy brought by not thinking before posting.

An Indonesian man was brought into jail for five years after posting "God does not exist" on Facebook.

Alexander Aan, 31, was attacked and beaten by angered people who entered his government office at the Dharsmasraya Development Planning Board on Wednesday. He was taken into custody on Friday due to the fear of being physically assaulted.

The post was created on a Facebook Page titled Ateis Minang (Minang Atheist) which Aan created. Supporters are urging people to release him.

Police Chief Chairul Aziz believed Aan had defiled Islam by using passages from the Koran to denounce the existence of God and highlight his atheist views, a criteria of tainting religion.

Aan, who was raised as a Muslim, grew to the realization that God could not exist. He said he did not believe in angels, devils, heaven, hell, as well as other "myths". He strongly defended of his belief and was aware of losing his job.

There is a law in Indonesia that violates atheism. A minimum sentence of five years in prison will be sanctioned to those who try to stop others believing in a faith, and will be charged for blasphemy.

Aan was charged because he used Facebook to spread beliefs that violate the law. Furthermore, it was pointed out he lied on his job application by saying he was Muslim. Aan though dared to ask the investigators:

"If God really exists and has absolute power, why doesn’t God prevent bad things from happening in this world?"

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Big Tokyo quake chances 'within the next few years'

Researchers say that the chance of a huge earthquake hitting the Japanese capital Tokyo will be much greater than official predictions suggest.

The team from the University of Tokyo said that about 75% chance of a magnitude 7.0 quake will strike the busy capital in the next four years. The Japanese government predicted of such event has 70% probability in the next 30 years.

The warning comes less than a year after the massive quake and tsunami devastated Japan's north-eastern coast and killed thousands.

Tokyo was hit by a 7.9 magnitude quake back in 1923, ravaging more than 100,000 people, mostly in fires.

Researchers based their figures on data from the growing number of tremors in the capital since the March 11, 2011 quake and tsunami. Compared with normal years, there has been a five-fold increase in the number of quakes in the Tokyo metropolitan area since the March disaster.

The calculations were based on Japan's Meteorological Agency, showing that the seismic activity had increased in the area around the capital, thus leading to a higher probability of a major quake.

Though it is "hard to predict" how big the casualty will result, government have been warning the citizens to be prepared.

Japan among the nations that are lined in the "Pacific Ring of Fire", that's why earthquakes are common and is considered as one of the world's most quake-prone countries.

Pink elephant caught on camera

A baby elephant has been caught on camera in Botswana. It's color? Pink.

Experts believe that the little pink calf is an albino, an extremely rare phenomenon in African elephants. These type of elephants have more of a reddish-brown or pink hue.

Dr. Mike Chase of conservation charity Elephants Without Borders said that surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. He said however that there might be a little hope for the pink calf as it has already learned to adapt to its condition.
